Eduard Arnhold (10.6.1849 -10.8.1925), the founder and donor of the German Academy Villa Massimo, was one of the most important fine arts patrons during the German Empire and the Weimar Republic. Beyond the construction and the donation of the Villa Massimo, he also supported the new establishment of the Bibliotheca Hertziana in Rome. Eduard Arnhold passed away on 10. August 1925. He neither experienced the daily life in the Academy, nor could he ever take residence here, as the institute was restituted to the German Reich only in 1929. Now for almost one hundred years the Villa Massimo accomodates in Rome artists from Germany. For one year artists of fine arts, literature, composition or architecture can live and work in Rome with a Villa-Massimo-scholarship. The park of the Villa Massimo offers generous studios with adjacent living accomodation.
